City Grown Farms: bringing Seattle closer to food

Supplier Spotlight: City Grown Farms

Summer is always an exciting time at Stockbox because we get to spotlight local produce…and not just kale! This summer, we are working with three local produce suppliers: Viva Farms, Seattle Tilth, and City Grown, which holds a special place in my heart!

City Grown’s mission is to bring people closer to the source of their food. They do this by farming with Land Partners on plots across Seattle and then distributing the produce through a CSA, farm stands, and retail at Stockbox! And, they don’t just grow kale: they offer a diverse selection of northwest favorites ranging from radishes to sunflowers and pea tendrils.

city grownThis is especially exciting for me because one of their plots and farmstands is just a few doors down from where I live, at the Crown Hill Center. The Crown Hill Center is a former Seattle elementary school that my neighborhood helped to re-claim a few years ago, after it was put on the surplus list. The park is now managed by Seattle Parks and the building is now home to a daycare, ballet school, and various non-profits. And, with the City Grown partnership, an underutilized side yard is now home to a healthy urban farm, which serves the neighborhood, the families that use the park and center, and Stockbox customers!

City Grown is the kind of supplier that we love working with because their mission is so closely aligned with Stockbox’s. They are dedicated to building more resilient and self-sustaining communities by bringing food closer to home. And, they do this by investing in traditionally underserved spaces – in their case, underutilized land.

You can learn more about City Grown on their website and you can pick up their produce, delivered fresh to Stockbox South Park Grocery every Tuesday and Friday.
